The Marine Microbial Ecology laboratory in the Division of Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a research assistant / research associate to work on developing a new toolkit to study symbiosis between microalgae and bacteria.
The successful applicant will participate in a fascinating project in Prof. Shady Amin’s laboratory on the development of single-cell metabolomics and genomics to characterize the microbiome of microalgae and discover the chemical currencies that drive this important symbiosis in modern oceans.
This project is funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation as part of the Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Program and focuses on developing microfluidic systems to isolate minute volumes, optimizing mass spectrometry techniques to detect ultra-small volumes and concentrations and apply cutting-edge single-cell genomics to characterize microbes in such small volumes.
The successful candidate will be involved in growing and maintaining microalgal and bacterial cultures, preparing samples for metabolomics and operating a custom-designed microosmotic pump to isolate single microalgal cells from cultures and the environment.
The candidate will work closely with other members in the laboratory, who will be working on different aspects of the project.
Our laboratory is a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students.
Applicants must have a B.Sc. in biology, chemistry, oceanography or a relevant field. Ideally, the candidate will have a strong background in both biology and chemistry and will have had some experience with mass spectrometry.
Excellent experimental and organizational skills are required.
For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter, copy of undergraduate transcripts and a curriculum vitae and three letters of reference, all in PDF format.
If you have any questions, please email Prof. Shady Amin at samin nyu.edu.
The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled.
