The primary activity of the CSSD Technician is to :

Run Sterilizers on to a dummy run. Note length of cycle.

Do Bowie Dick and sterilizing tests leak and spores for all sterilizers.

Perform sterilizing test in Theatre sterilizer. Tabulate results in diary.

Making, checking and wrapping theatre linen bundles and packs.

Labeling all sterile stock prior to sterilizing according to traceability requirements.

Stripping theatre trolley and disposing of contents according to types.

Washing trays, bowls, etc instruments, tubing pillows, arm boards, various operating table attachments, and cleaning trolley.

Setting instrument trays, wrapping metal sets, sucker tubing, pento trays, etc.

Set up special instrument trays e.g. Total Hip Replacement, Total Knee Replacement, Gross & Kempf etc.

Unloading and folding of theatre linen daily.

Cutting combine etc., folding, packaging, dating stocks of dressings, linen etc. for wards and departments; also special stock for LDR.

Putting away sterilized theatre linen, checking and replenishing stocks and stock rotation.

Cleaning of shelves and cupboards.

Ordering and putting away stores each week.

Prepare special wound packs for individual patients as required.

Check and restock male (OR Suite) change room for linen and overalls.

Receive used instrument trays from the different wards

Maintain a safe environment by being aware of and abiding by the CSH Infection Control Procedures.

Practice standard precautions.

Participate in staff appraisals on a yearly basis.

Take responsibility for own work performance, personal development and keeping up with current changes in the CSSD area.

Rotate through the various duties within the CSSD area to enable distribution of workload and to assist in maintaining individual skills and knowledge

Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the function of all equipment used in CSSD to decontaminate, pack or sterilize supplies and equipment.

Demonstrate the ability to perform and interpret the basic routine testing of the above equipment, and to report any suspected abnormality to the HOD of the Theatre Operating Suite.

Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by adhering to departmental policies, maintaining safe practices within our work performance and reporting any possible safety problems to the Unit Manager of the Operating Theatre Suite.

Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and responsibilities.

Participate in CSSD staff meetings, thereby assisting in updating and formulating departmental policies and procedures and with improvements required within the department.

Communicate and cooperate with other members of the CSSD staff including staff from other areas, thereby assisting in maintaining the team approach for the department.
