Job Description : About the Opportunity

The Agency

The Office of Economic Analysis unit operates under the Chief Operating Office (COO), within the Department of Administrative Services (DAS).

This unit consists of the State Economist, Senior Demographic Analyst, Senior Corrections Forecast Analyst, Senior Economist and Administrative Assistant.

The office works at the highest levels of State Government in planning and policy development and authoritatively represents the Governor’s office and Executive branch of Government internally, to special interest groups, the public, media, and the legislature.

The Governor and the Legislature rely on the forecasts and work products of the office to determine what resources will be available to the state for budgetary purposes and to determine budget current service levels.

The Economist Role & Responsibilities

The Economist provides analytical support and related economic information to the Office of Economic Analysis State Economist and staff.

The Economist is responsible for data collection, analysis and research that assists and supports the forecasting process for the quarterly Oregon Economic and Revenue Forecast.

The primary duties and responsibilities include :

  • Monitor, research and analyze economic trends at the national, regional and local levels to aid in forecasting economic conditions.
  • Choose data sources and methods for assisting during the forecasting process, including preparing statistical estimates

  • Prepare and monitor national and local trend data to be used in developing the state's economic, General Fund, and other forecasts
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct special research analysis studies on factors influencing state revenues and expenditures;
  • Research and develop alternative forecasting techniques

  • Interface with Treasury, Budget and Management, State's Controller's Division, Department of Revenue, Legislative Revenue Office, and Legislative Fiscal Office on revenue and budget issues
  • Creation of written technical reports and pretension of findings based on person research
  • Support in the production the state population and general fund forecast
  • Provide expert testimony for the Legislature. Make presentations to the public on economic and revenue outlooks

    What We Are Looking For

    A collaborative teammate with an eye for detail and a passion for data analysis, who also has a Bachelor's degree in economics or a related field and one year of experience doing economic research or econometric forecasting.

  • Note : An advanced degree in economics or a related field may substitute for the experience.
  • The most qualified and competitive applicants will possess the following skills, background and attributes :

  • Experience in the principles and practices of economic forecasting and analysis including population forecasting
  • Experience as an economic advisor
  • Experience in public relations (including press relations, personnel, marketing, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of budgeting
