What we are looking for in IATA Africa and the Middle East?
In order to deliver more value to our members and stakeholders, to overcome the regional geographical and operational challenges, and to maximize the potential for Safety & Flight Operations, we are looking for a professional who will fill the role of an Assistant Director for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) sub-region.
Largely autonomous role, focusing on regional Aviation Safety.Role Description Assistant Director Safety & Flight OperationsReporting to the Head of Business Delivery, Africa & Middle East (AME), and working in a close collaborative partnership with the AME Regional Director Safety and Flight Operations (SFO), and the regional SFO team;
the post holder will be responsible for driving IATA’s Safety, Flight Operations, Air Traffic Management and Airspace Infrastructure activities in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) sub-region.
The Assistant Director will be responsible for the regional application of IATA's policies in support of IATA's Member Airlines and will take a proactive role in driving new industry initiatives to enhance safety and efficiency of flight operations throughout the region, and with neighboring regions where objectives are common.
This shall be accomplished through high level contact with member airlines, government authorities, air navigation service providers (ANSPs), airports and international agencies, particularly ICAO.
Act on behalf of IATA member airlines to promote a safe, efficient and cost-effective operational environment in accordance with IATA's strategic priorities and objectives
Represent member-airlines working closely with regional ICAO offices, relevant government agencies and regional organizations to advocate IATA technical policies and resolve operational issues
Directly support the creation of regional industry initiatives to enhance safety and efficiency including work to mitigate aviation's impact on the environment
Liaise with Regional Director Safety & Flight Operations (AME) to establish global and regional safety and flight operation policies and objectives
Manage projects, and deliver on short, medium, and long-term objectives to the benefit of IATA members in accordance with IATA governance policy and consultation with relevant coordination groups
Respond to tactical issues arising in day to day operations in the region as well as provide information and support to member airlines during periods of disruption
Lead the MENA Contingency Coordination Team (CCT) during periods of unrest
Coordinate airlines input during rule-making and standard-setting processes of ICAO and CAAs in the region
Identify pending regulatory changes and coordinate IATA and airline input to these changes;
On behalf of the member airlines promote enhancement to the regional airspace framework to support flight, fuel, and CO2 efficiencies
Represent the member airlines during consultation with ANSPs and civil aviation authorities on Air Navigation Charges
Promote IATA’s Six Point Safety Strategy and take responsibility for regional leadership of the IOSA, ISSA and ISAGO audit programs
Establish and maintain close working relationships with : oIATA Regional SFO offices oNone SFO IATA divisions oIATA member airlines oCivil aviation administrations and air navigation service providers oICAO Mid RegionoInter-governmental agencies and trans-national bodies
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Minimum 10 years of professional experience with at least 5 years’ experience in a management role within an airline, air navigation service provider, civil aviation administration or a similar aviation related entity
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, or a relevant discipline
Fluency in English (CEFR : C1)
Working knowledge of ICAO standards and recommended practices
Ability to deal with member airlines at a technical, safety and operational level with a positive approach to problem solving
Familiar with Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, and the airspace infrastructure in the MENA Region
Working knowledge of airline safety management systems
Experience in Airline Safety, Navigation and ATM, Flight Planning, and Flight Operations environments, and / or experience working in an ATC, ATFM environment
Ability to develop effective advocacy strategies, including drafting clear and concise technical papers
Competent to work autonomously, perform under pressure and be adaptable to variable working hours and schedules
Capacity to travel frequently and manage a large and dynamic workload whilst on the road
Strong communication skills and ability to speak in public to large audiences
Experience in influencing decision makers at CEO and DGCA level (preferably within the MENA Region)
Experience in networking with, and influencing stakeholders, governments and other institutions on aviation matters
Support fostering a culture of inclusion, integrity, team spirit, strategic thinking partnering, innovative pioneering and acting with a simple human touch
Advanced degree e.g. MBA
CPL, ATPL or ATC license
Experience in implementing SMS, IOSA and / or as IOSA Auditor
Experience in successful public speaking engagements, in making effective presentations to varying audiences and in preparing reports based on technical merits and facts
Proficiency in regional languages (CEFR B1) French, Arabic
Travel Required : Y 50%
