MMO AND PAM OPERATOR
A Lead shall be appointed from the Marine Mammal Observer and PAM Operator team and shall liaise with the HSEC Field Rep on all general activities and reports.
The Lead shall work in tandem with the PAM Operator to ensure implementation of the mitigation measures are in accordance with the Company Environmental Plan (EP) and issued regulatory requirements within the JNCC Guideline for Minimizing the Risk of Disturbance to Marine Mammals from Seismic Surveys.
Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) shall actively assist the vessel's marine crew and seismic survey team in monitoring and reporting the sightings of cetaceans or other protected marine species and, wherever necessary according to legislation or recognized industry practice, take positive action to avoid any interference or negative interaction with these animals.
Visual aid of binoculars, report, log, identify and the immediate notification of the Seismic Operator in the event of a sighting which requires implementation of a mitigating action.
As visual observations are not conducive during the hours of darkness, the PAM Operator undertakes continuous monitoring by listening for marine mammal presence during the hours of darkness using specialized towed Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) equipment and software.
It shall be explicitly stated that during any sighting or acoustic detection that requires a shutdown the MMO or PAM Operator shall have direct and immediate communication with the designated recording room person to order the shutdown.
Preparation of Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Reports detailing all observations / acoustic detections of Marine Fauna.
At the end of the survey issue draft and the final report to the client.
