This individual will provide legal support to the Upjohn business and its leaders in the entire Africa and Middle East (AfME) region.
Such support shall either be direct, in coordination with IMB International Platform Lawyers or through external counsel.
This position reports directly to the Upjohn Emerging Markets (EM) Chief Counsel , and shall also concurrently be directly responsible for the legal function in one or two countries in AfME.
Current or previous in-country legal function management experience is required for the role.
Cluster Business Leaders’ Legal Support Role
Provides legal support to the AfME Cluster Leads and Teams in order to maximise business opportunities, identify and resolve potential legal problems and minimise commercial exposure within the law.
Is a member of the relevant AfME Regional Leadership Team, as may be applicable, and contributes to the management of and development of strategy, using experience and legal expertise to add value to debate and decision-making.
Aligns with relevant AfME country attorneys from the IMB International Platform to provide effective, commercially-oriented advice, while identifying & addressing exposure to risk.
Manages the matrix and maintains an open and regular dialogue with countries in the region to ensure consistent legal support.
Provides innovative, business solution oriented legal counsel and advice for regional teams and product matters, including those with significant enterprise level impact using a high level of business knowledge and understanding of the external environment.
Proactively advises the Upjohn EM Chief Counsel and other relevant legal colleagues in other practice groups (i.e. IP, Regulatory, etc.
on regional or cross-country issues that require escalation.
Regional Lead Role
In addition to the role directly supporting the Cluster Leads of the AfME Region, works and collaborates with a team of legal professionals across AfME belonging to the IMB International Platform;
responsible for identifying specific country needs with the aim of determining best legal support structure for the markets across the region in the future.
In collaboration with the Upjohn EM Chief Counsel and regional business leadership, sets legal team strategy and goals for providing proactive, objective, day-
to-day legal support to the AfME Upjohn business.
Accountable for ensuring optimal business and country-specific legal support for the AfME markets. Helps manage the legal budget Upjohn Legal EM, monitoring expenditure to ensure services are cost effective and within agreed budgetary constraints.
Manages the matrix in order to proactively advise the Upjohn EM Chief Counsel, other practice groups’ Chief Counsels and appropriate business leaders on country, regional or environmental issues that require escalation and offers timely, innovative and practical solutions.
Stays current on legislative changes, global healthcare trends and other environmental issues related to the development, marketing and sale of pharmaceuticals relevant to the Upjohn business and ensures that lawyers and clients in his / her region are educated and informed about relevant legal issues and principles in order to pre-empt problems.
Country Legal Leadership Role Concurrent with the previous roles as described, lead the legal function in any of the markets belonging to the AfME region and directly work on issues therein.
Responsibilities as direct country legal support includes primary responsibility for providing Upjohn country management with the legal perspective on internal, as well as external issues that have potential impact on the Upjohn business in that market.
Such responsibility includes recommending courses of action for issues relating to laws, regulations, contracts, patents and trademarks and coordinating with external counsel on referred matters.
Acts as a powerful advocate for clients while championing the interests of the Pfizer enterprise.
Full member of the Upjohn EM Legal Leadership team, responsible for partnering with the Upjohn EM Chief Counsel in setting and executing strategy for the Upjohn EM Legal Team to build a culture aligned with the Upjohn BU Culture.
Leads using the Legal Division Commitments, embedding our shared priorities within the platform and creating an ownership culture where compliance is a priority.
Licensed to practice law within the AfME region.
Minimum of 14 years of post-qualification experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.
Significant and broad experience of advising on commercial, corporate & pharmaceutical matters. Strong drafting skills.
In depth understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and of Pfizer (including structure, culture, relevant policies and procedures).
Proven ability to cultivate strong client relationships, build credibility and successfully influence leadership in a fast paced business climate.
Strategic and proactive. Anticipates needs and able to prioritize quickly.
Role model for open / clear communication and interpersonal skills at all levels in the company.
Good handle of the English language. French speaking, preferred.
