Pediatrician Duties andResponsibilities

While pediatricians canspecialize in one or more areas of practice, most doctors who workin this role share several core responsibilities :

Conduct MedicalExaminations

One of the centralduties of a pediatrician is conducting medical examinations andassessments for infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents.

Theseexaminations can include both routine physical examinations andoffice visits related to specific ailments or injuries.

Pediatricians conduct a series of tests and checks to assesspatient health, ranging from ear, nose, and throat examinations toreflex, pulmonary, and respiratory tests.

Develop Diagnoses

While conducting examinations, pediatricians begin todevelop diagnoses related to reported health issues or symptoms. Apediatrician may notice several indicators and decide to conductfurther tests or ask follow-up questions of patients and theirparents to get more comprehensive information related to the healthissue the patient is experiencing.

They may also work from a numberof diagnoses and begin eliminating possibilities.

Establish TreatmentPlans

Pediatricians establishtreatment plans to help resolve patient health issues andillnesses. This can include prescribing medication such asantibiotics to treat minor infections, applying bandages or salvesto wounds and burns, and providing information to patients andparents regarding treatment procedures to use at home.

In addition, pediatricians may request follow-up appointments to determinewhether these treatments were effective.

Provide Referrals toSpecialists

If a patient requiresfurther assistance, a pediatrician may provide a referral to aspecialist. A patient that comes in with an unidentifiable rash, for example, may need a referral to a dermatologist, or if thepediatrician suspects that a patient has a broken bone or sprain, they may refer the patient to an orthopedist.

This aspect of thejob requires a thorough knowledge of doctors and specialists andthe ability to determine a doctor who can help resolve thepatient’s specific complaint.

Maintain PatientRecords

Pediatricians supportoverall health and wellness by maintaining detailed patientrecords. These records can include details of specific visits, notes on treatment methodologies and their effect, and generalpatient and family information.

These records can help withtreatment at specialists’ or other doctors’offices, and in some cases may be provided to social servicespersonnel to ensure child safety and well-being.

Communicate with Patients andParents

Throughout theexamination, diagnosis, and treatment processes, pediatricianscommunicate directly with patients and their parents.

For youngpatients, a parent or guardian will likely remain in the roomduring the examination to ask the pediatrician questions andprovide further information.

Because children may be hesitant inthe doctor’s office, the pediatrician may also rely onparents to soothe and instruct theirchildren.
