The Specialist Fabrication is responsible for providing the staff and students with technical support for the design and manufacture of prototypes and models as well as the operation, maintenance and repair of the new and existing equipment.
The incumbent is responsible for using high degree of technical expertise and maintaining a number of laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC machines located in the HCT’s purpose built fabrication facilities for both the students and the faculty.
He / she will team up with the multi skilled technicians, ensuring to provide service and support to both academic and research staff in the Academic Divisions.
To demonstrate high degree of technical expertise in the commissioning of equipment and models, using a full range of conventional machine tools, bench equipment and fabrication.
To maintain the operation and maintenance of workshop machine tools, plant, equipment and machinery involving hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing and assembly applications.
To supervise the skills provided by the team including the use of a wide variety of conventional machine tools with the opportunity to progress onto CNC machine tools.
To receive instructions from students and / or staff, either verbally or in the form of drawings or sketches, and to plan the best manufacturing process using the tools and equipment available.
To advise students and staff on the design, construction and provision of research and laboratory equipment.
To contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduates in the use of machine / hand tools in completing individual research projects.
To supervise and demonstrate the safe usage of machine tools and hand tools to the students.
To supervise and demonstrate the safe use of laser cutting, 3D modelling and rapid prototyping equipment to the students.
To be responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe workshop environment and to be the designated custodian for assigned laboratory space.
To check, clean and maintain workshop tools and equipment.
To comply with both statutory and university safety protocols.
To maintain a record of timekeeping and keep a log of work undertaken and for whom it was carried out.
To keep abreast of emerging technologies as well as innovative and best practices in professional development.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Education Technology, Applied Learning, Applied Communication, etc.
from a recognized university
Full English proficiency is required.
Advanced computer literacy is required e.g. MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, JAVA, HTML, Blackboard. PD Portal.
Minimum of 3 years experience working with digital tools and fabrication, maintenance applications
Candidates with previous related experience in lab environment, workshop management, machining operations, especially teaching fabrication applications and prototyping in a academic environment, will be preferred.
