New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Director of Inclusion and Equity reporting to the Chief of Staff for NYU Abu Dhabi.

The Director of Inclusion and Equity is responsible for leading and directing NYUAD’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs for faculty and staff.

This encompasses the development of intercultural fluency which is foundational to the practice of inclusion across the University, and includes NYUAD’s compliance with U.

S. and UAE statutory laws, and with University policies that ensure equitable treatment. The incumbent must collaborate broadly across various departments and constituencies to maximize the benefits of inclusion, diversity, belonging, and equity in support of the University's mission and core goals.

To achieve these obligations, the Director must serve three critical functions :

  • strategic leadership on equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging across the institution
  • awareness education and training development, implementation, and assessment for various campus constituencies
  • data analytics and periodic assessment of NYUAD climate and efforts to cultivate and maintain an equitable environment
  • The position maintains ongoing collaboration with Human Resources, Employee Relations, the Office of General Counsel, Student Life, the Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation and the Office of Equal Opportunity at NYU New York, the Office of the Provost, etc.

    to ensure consistency of principles and goals, and to keep abreast of DEI efforts across the Global Network University.

    Key Responsibilities :

    DEI Strategic Direction :

    Lead the development and implementation of a long-term DEI strategy to promote a fair, open, and inclusive environment that reflects the unique character of the Abu Dhabi campus community.

    Collaborate as part of the Diversity Equity Inclusion Committee (DEIC) with a variety of stakeholder groups to ensure their needs are captured.

    Partner with the Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity to support faculty in developing inclusive classrooms.

    Design and implement initiatives (e.g., campus conversations, sustained dialogue, etc.) routed in responsive communication and a shared language to advance an institutional culture of dignity and respect.

    Periodically review and update the strategy in response to the dynamic internal, external, and legal environment of NYUAD, in collaboration with the Office of Compliance.

    Work closely with NYU’s Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation in New York City, to ensure institutional consistency of the strategic plan.

    Awareness Education :

    Develop and implement relevant awareness programs and diversity education curriculum for a variety of campus audiences, including customized content for constituent workers.

    Ensure new stakeholders are effectively oriented on equity policies and procedures during the orientation and induction process, and that current employees are periodically refreshed within established timeframes.

    Maintain continuity of awareness events and activities, assess their effectiveness, and seek data-driven continuous improvement.

    Outreach, Advice, And Guidance :

    Communicate regularly and cultivate trust with key individuals (e.g., the Vice Chancellor, Provost, deans, directors, program heads) and constituent group representatives (e.

    g., Faculty Council, Staff Council, Postdoctoral Council, relevant student affinity groups) to promote transparency of DEI strategy and ensure its alignment with other University goals and objectives.

    Establish an ongoing network of support between the Office of Inclusion and Equity and key departments such as the Offices of General Counsel, Employee Relations, HR and Academic HR Affairs, Compliance, Public Safety, Campus Life, and the Provost Office.

    Formalize and maintain a model of operational collaboration with clear protocols for shared problem-solving among these groups.

    Intercultural Development :

    Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to facilitate and promote the development of intercultural fluency across campus.

    Recognize and reward demonstrations of competency. Recommend interventions where needed in order to raise levels to desired benchmarks, including sensitivity to the local cultural environment and expectations.

    Collaborate with the head of Learning and Organizational Development (L&OD) regarding needs assessment. Collaborate with the Campus Life Office of Spiritual Life and Intercultural Education (SLICE) to ensure coordinated efforts for employee and student communities.

    Tools and Resources :

    Collaborate with the DEIC and its advisory board to serve as resources, support mechanisms, and checks and balances. Put in place a variety of other tools and resources to support stakeholders (e.

    g., online assessments, focus groups, current research, behavioral competencies, managers’ diversity tool kit, etc.). Research and keep abreast of current trends and thought leadership in the field, globally and regionally.

    Compliance :

    Track trends in hiring, promotion, and other employment-related functions, and provide data analytics for senior leadership.

    Counsel NYUAD campus leaders, directors, deans, and program heads on preventive measures and solutions that mitigate risks.

    Collaborate with the NYU NY Office of Equal Opportunity and the NYUAD Offices of Legal Counsel and Compliance to review trends, and develop compliance strategies.

    Supervision :

    Supervise staff by recruiting, assigning and establishing priorities and overseeing workflow and all office procedures. Exercise authority or make effective recommendations for hirings, promotions, salary adjustments or any other change of status.

    Staff supervised may include full-time exempt and non-exempt employees.

    Budget :

    Oversee and monitor assigned department budget : analyze past expenditures, forecast needs and recommend future allocations, review / approve expenses with signatory authority for routine and non-routine expenses.

    Prepare and analyze related financial reports.

    Required Education :

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, education, or a relevant field.
  • Preferred Education :

  • Degree in organizational development, social policy, or other relevant field preferred; doctorate or law degree
  • Certification in diversity & inclusion
  • Required Experience :

  • Minimum of overall 10 years of experience in developing, implementing and managing inclusion and diversity initiatives, preferably in a global academic setting
  • Knowledge of U.S. federal and New York State legislation related to equal opportunity and the rights of individuals with disabilities (e.
  • g., Title VII, Title IX, VAWA, Clery Act, ADA, etc.) to advise the Office of Compliance

  • Proven experience supervising individuals and teams at various levels
  • Demonstrated experience in directing projects, managing resources, and projecting future capacity
  • Advanced written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong problem solving, conflict resolution, analytical, and critical thinking skills gained within a complex, demanding work environment
  • Excellent training and presentation skills, including the ability to engage extemporaneously with audiences to build relationships and gain trust
  • Ability to use good judgment, discretion, diplomacy, flexibility, and initiative
  • Ability to inspire confidence and build consensus in support of equity and inclusion goals
  • Knowledge of U.S. federal and New York State legislation related to equal opportunity and the rights of individuals with disabilities (e.
