The Opportunity Reporting to the Director of Library and Learning Commons the Assistant Director manages the Dubai Campus Library Public Services unit The highly motivated collaborative innovative and service oriented Assistant Director provides leadership in strategic planning administration and resource allocation for the Public Services Dubai team He She supervises and directs campus library public services operations on a day to day basis so that the library runs smoothly and efficiently The Assistant Director is a member of the Library s Leadership Council and contributes to Library planning and budgeting policy development and implementation in support of the University s vision mission and strategic plan Critical Success Factors Strong organizational and leadership skills to supervise guide and mentor staff and library faculty to build a successful team Demonstrated ability to initiate develop prioritize and manage projects or services Must be able to communicate effectively with university faculty staff students administrators and external community stakeholders Experience and broader vision of providing user centered and innovative academic library services in all aspects Aptitude for technology willingness to learn new systems and integrate to enhance services Excellent written and verbal communication presentation and interpersonal skills Ability to work with others in a pleasant and open manner The Responsibilities Collaborating with Assistant Director Public Services Abu Dhabi supervises and leads Dubai campus library public services activities and initiatives such as scheduling staff allocations and hiring performance evaluation and service procedures to ensure smooth and cohesive public services operations Develops implements and performs ongoing evaluation of library public services procedural practices Ensures technology is used as an appropriate tool for information access and is leveraged by the library to provide wide access in a cost effective way Evaluates and identifies needs and trends within academic library user services and develops strategies for library public services and programs Mentors directs and motivates library faculty and staff to provide professional user focused services by modelling excellent customer services and providing guidance on professional development Performs faculty and staff evaluations and offers constructive performance feedback coordinates peer reviews and provides performance reports Contributes to the strategy planning and policy development of the library in support of the university s vision and mission Contributes to the planning and evaluation of library resources and infrastructure required to provide dynamic and integrated library services Promotes the library services and resources by building meaningful and productive partnerships with internal and external communities Develops and maintains professional relationship with academic libraries in the UAE and with other information entities in the region and internationally Serving as liaison librarian to assigned academic programs for the provision of information and instructional services collection management and engagement with faculty staff and students promoting library resources and services Fostering and contributing to an environment of collegiality respect trust and teamwork that enables and empowers staff to positively contribute to the goals of the university As an academic faculty position active participation and engagement in scholarship teaching and service is expected Other assigned duties as appropriate Degree of Independence Complexity of Environment Supervises all aspects of the library public services unit in Dubai campus High degree of independence in managing workflows projects and initiatives Collaborates with Public Services Abu Dhabi Campus and Technical Services unit to present and clarify processes and procedures Has decision making authority and responsibility for campus library operations and in other areas as assigned by the Director Works on budget requests policies personnel and other administrative details Strong organizational skills ability to plan prioritize and document workflows Production of work is accurate efficient and timely Contacts Impact of Interaction Works closely with staff and the director in preparation and implementation of plans and proposals Initiates contact and maintains good relations with administrative and Information Technology Services departments Represents the Library to external visitors and in external committees functions as needed Maintains links with ZU libraries other university libraries professional associations and institutions to foster good relations and to keep abreast of latest developments The Requirements Master s degree in Library and Information Studies MLIS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent At least eight years of library experience with increasing responsibilities 5 years of demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in an academic library Demonstrable knowledge of information technology and familiarity with key Library technologies and systems Demonstrated ability to work within team environment to initiate develop manage and complete projects Demonstrated ability to deal with changes ambiguity and complex problems Experience in training and mentoring Ability to write clear reports and convincing proposals Arabic language proficiency is an added advantage Self starter experienced in management Sensitivity to local culture Ability to integrate information technology effectively within library processes Skills of persuasion and presentation to convince decision makers of library s needs for essential resources
